WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - Laurence Heads
(Stockton-on-Tees, England/Repton School) won in straight sets at No. 3
singles, but the Monmouth University men's tennis team was defeated by Queens
College, 6-1, Tuesday afternoon. With the loss, the Hawks fall to 3-8, while the
Knights, ranked No. 24 nationally in Division II, improve to 8-2.
After the Knights
swept the three doubles flights, the two teams engaged in several hard-fought
matches to reach the final score. Three of the singles matches went to a third
set, while Heads pulled out a very close two-set decision over Nikolaj Wulff, 7-5,
7-6, at No. 3.
Freddy
Marcinkowski (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) fell at No. 1 to Attila Toth, the
nationally-ranked No. 15 player at Division II, 6-1, 7-5. Francis Jedlinski
(Manalapan, N.J./Freehold Township) fell to Tyrone Ewels, 2-6, 6-0, 7-5, at No.
2, while twin brother Carl Jedlinski (Manalapan, N.J./Freehold Township) also
took a tough three-set loss to Andre Pellegrino, 6-7, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 4.
David
Sherwood (Little Egg Harbor, N.J./Pinelands) fell to Claudio Andrade, 6-3, 6-4,
at No. 5, while Stephen Suboleski (Sicklerville, N.J.) was defeated in three
sets by Jesse Smith, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 6.
The Hawks return to Northeast Conference action Thursday,
when they travel to Quinnipiac. First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Hamden,
Conn.
