WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - The Monmouth University field hockey program recently announced that it will host the Inaugural Timmy Passarella Fearless 5K Scholarship Run/Walk on Saturday, April 24th on the campus of MU. The event was set in motion as a tribute to the late Timmy Passarella, brother of former Blue and White standout, Molly Passarella.
"We really wanted to do something to show our support to Molly and her family because not only was she a talented player, but a part of our MUFH family," said Field Hockey Head Coach Carli Figlio. "When one of us is affected by something like this, we all feel it."
With all event proceeds going to the brand new Timmy Passarella Fearless Scholarship Fund, registration will take place from 2:15-3:15 pm with the 5K run/walk slated to start at 3:30 pm. A post 5K reception, including dinner and admission, will follow the event at the Multipurpose Activity Center Blue/White Club. Participation to the event is $40 and will be due by April 16th.
The event and scholarship are in remembrance and honor of Passarella's older brother, Timmy, who had courageously battled Ewing Sarcoma, a malignant round-cell tumor and rare disease in which cancer cells are found in the bone or soft tissue, for seven years before losing his battle earlier this spring. Passarella's fight has inspired all those that had the pleasure of knowing him and the field hockey program will honor his life with a scholarship in his name.
"There are so many families that have to deal with cancer and this is just our way of showing support for them all," said Coach Figlio.
Molly Passarella, a 2008 graduate, finished her career as one of the Monmouth's most decorated players in team history. During her four year career, she became the third player in MU history to earn NFHCA All-Mid-Atlantic Region honors while earning All-NEC First-Team honors in 2008 and All-NEC Second-Team honors in 2007. A standout off the field as well, Passarella was named to the NFHCA National Academic squad four times, graduating Summa Cum Laude with 3.97 GPA and earning a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics.
