SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Monmouth University men’s basketball fell at No. 4 Syracuse 108-56 in the Carrier Dome on Saturday night. The Hawks, who were led by Ed Waite’s 10 points and eight rebounds, and Gary Cox’s nine points, fall to 5-5 on the year, while the Orange improve to 8-0.

The Hawks, who were outrebounded 63-38, connected on 31.8% from the field, led by Waite's second double-digit outing of the year. Cox added three rebounds and a steal, while Khalil Brown notched a season-best eight points with two blocks. Dion Nesmith and Tyrone O'Garro added five boards each for the Blue and White.

"Obviously, Syracuse is a very good basketball team. Very talented. Very long. Very athletic," stated interim head coach Rick Callahan, who got his start in the business at Syracuse under coach Boeheim. "They take you out of your half court offense and it is hard to score against them. I think we can take away some positives though. I think we did a good job against their press tonight, and I think we did a good job with shot selection overall. But we had a hard time scoring against their traps."

Syracuse, which pushed the nation's leading home win streak to 28 games, had seven players in double-figures, led by a trio of double-doubles, including Michael Carter-Williams' 15 points and 16 assists. The Orange, who had 30 assists, 14 blocked shots and 12 steals, also got double-doubles from C.J. Fair (14 pts., 10 rebs.) and DaJuan Coleman (11 pts., 14 rebs.).

Andrew Nicholas netted the first five points for the Hawks, as his tip-in gave Monmouth an early 5-4 lead, before the Orange claimed a 10-5 edge following a pair of three-point trips with 15:28 showing. The Hawks answered with a 6-0 spurt, capped by Brown's baseline jumper, to take an 11-10 advantage, while Cox’s break away slam put Monmouth in front 13-12 with 13:08 showing.

SU responded with a 7-0 run to go ahead 19-13, before Jesse Steele’s three-pointer ignited a 6-0 streak for the Hawks, knotting the score at 19-19 at 10:32.

After Brown’s follow-dunk pulled the Hawks within 24-21 at 9:35, the Orange responded with a 25-4 run over seven minutes of action to take a 49-25 advantage. Steele’s three-pointer made the tally 49-28 with 2:14 remaining, but Syracuse ended the half with the final eight points, including six straight from DaJaun Coleman, to hold a 57-28 lead at the intermission.

Syracuse came out of the locker room with the first 13 points, and inflated it lead to 70-28 before Cox’s baseline jumper made the score 70-30 with 17:20 showing.

The Hawks put together spurts of 5-0, behind Jalen Palm’s three-pointer and a Max DiLeo jumper, and 6-0 following baskets from Waite, Nesmith and Stephen Spinella, but the Orange pushed its lead to as many as 57 points, with 2:55 remaining.

Monmouth returns to action on Wednesday, when the Hawks face the University of Maryland Terrapins at the Comcast Center at 8:00 p.m.
