HAWKS RALLY FALLS SHORT IN 12-9 LOSS TO MARIST
WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - Monmouth University freshman attacker Chris Daly (Wynnewood, Pa./Lower Merion) posted his first career four-goal game and tallied a season-high six points, but the Hawks fell to visiting Marist College 12-9 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Monmouth Stadium.
Daly, who now leads the Hawks with 14 goals and 22 points, netted a career-high four goals against the Red Foxes and assisted on a pair for a career-best six points for MU, which falls to 0-12 overall in its first season of competition, and 0-5 in the MAAC.
"I am proud of the guys and the way they fought and competed right up until the end today," said Monmouth head coach Brian Fisher. "We played one of our more complete games to-date, but we had some stretches that were tough to overcome. We have to find ways to stop a team's momentum and prevent them from going on runs like that. But overall, we had great effort from our guys today."
Monmouth jumped out to a 2-0 lead as Daly opened the scoring with an unassisted tally at 12:59, and freshman Kevin Osback (Fair Lawn, N.J./Fair Lawn/East Stroudsburg) netted his first career goal off an assist from classmate Eric Berger (Ardsley, Pa./Penn Charter), but Marist answered with two Joseph Radin goals to close out the quarter, to tie the game at 2-2.
The Red Foxes, who scored five straight goals, notched the only three goals of the second quarter, to take a 5-2 lead into the break.
Monmouth responded 57 seconds into the second half on Daly's unassisted goal, to cut the deficit to 5-3, but Marist responded with a 4-0 streak in nearly four minutes of action to grab a 9-3 edge with 49 seconds left in the third. Daly halted the MC spurt with 32 ticks on the clock, off freshman Steve Murawski's (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) first career assist, to get MU within 9-4 at the end of three periods.
The Blue & White outscored Marist 5-3 in the fourth quarter, as junior Ryan Schwartz (Corning, N.Y./Corning East/Onondaga CC) started things for the Hawks at 13:06, off a feed from Berger, while junior co-captain Zach Johannes' (Sparta, N.J./Pope John XXIII/Franklin & Marshall) unassisted tally pulled Monmouth within 9-6 with 8:58 showing.
Marist (4-8, 2-3 MAAC) reclaimed an 11-6 lead with 4:56 remaining following a pair of Colin Joka scores.
Daly found Johannes for his second goal of the game, the first multi-goal game of his MU career, with 4:25 showing to make the score 11-7, before Nick Papayanakos pushed Marist back in front 12-7 with 2:13 left.
The Hawks climbed within 12-8 on Daly's fourth score with 1:57 remaining, while freshman Tyler Keen (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West) registered his eighth career goal, off an assist from Daly, with 1:04 showing, to account for the final tally.
Monmouth outshot Marist 41-37 overall in the contest, forcing MC goalkeeper Dave Scarcello to make 10 saves. Freshman Nick Hreshko (Warrington, Pa./La Salle College H.S.) made five saves in the opening half for the Hawks, while junior Garrett Conaway (Marriottsville, Md./Liberty/Essex-Howard CC) made six stops in the final 30 minutes for the Blue & White.
Monmouth returns to action next Saturday, when the Hawks host Detroit on Senior Day at 1:00 p.m. The Hawks will host a youth clinic (grades 3-8) and fundraiser with proceeds benefiting the nonprofit organization Wounded Warrior Project® (WWP) prior to their regular season finale.
