WINSTON-SALEM N.C.- The MU men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams finished the opening weekend of the season at the Wake Forest Open, with a few Hawks competing at the Wagner College Invitational.
“Our group really made the most of the opportunity to compete here in a meet that we’ve never attended before,” said Head Coach Joe Compagni on the Wake Forest Open. “We were able to get some nice early season marks.”
In the track events, the women’s 4x100 relay team of Lauren McDonald (Roseland, N.J./West Essex Regional), Kate Frye (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant Boro), Laura Williams (North Brunswick, N.J./North Brunswick Township), and Lachelle Wallace (Herndon, Va./South Lakes) qualified for ECAC’s and posted the second highest mark in school history at 47.11 seconds to place second. Williams later on would qualify for ECAC’s in the 400 hurdles, finishing second. The men’s relay team of Jalen Walker (Burlington, N.J./BCIT/Burlington Township), Geordan Ferguson (Lakehurst, N.J./Manchester Township), John Malespina (Park Ridge, N.J./Park Ridge) and Ahmier Dupree (Lakewood, N.J./Lakewood/Montclair State) took seventh in the 4x100, a qualifying mark for IC4A’s.
The women’s javelin saw Kelsey Reese (Deptford, N.J./Paul VI/George Mason) take fourth with a throw of 149’3”, and Faith Blamon (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) nab sixth with a toss of 146’9”, both of which are ECAC qualifying javelin marks. In the discus on the men’s side, Errol Jeffrey (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bronx C.C./Transit Tech) claimed first, besting 41 others in the field with his mark of 175’9”, which is the second best in MU history. Taylor Bernstein (Pine Brook, N.J./Montville Township) finished seventh at 159’4”. Both Jeffrey and Bernstein qualified for IC4A’s with their finishes. The women’s discus had three competitors place in the top six, including second place with Taylor Johnson (Woolwich, N.J./Kingsway Regional) at 152’4” and Aziza Ahmed (Princeton, N.J./Hightstown) just behind in third at an even 149’. Their marks were good enough to qualify for ECAC’s, while Qiyana Hill (Middle Island, N.Y./Longwood) came in at 138’10”, good for sixth.
At Wagner, Wulf Sutcliffe (Mt. Gretna, Pa./Cedar Crest) won the hammer throw at 167’1”, and Eric Kahana (Freehold, N.J./Freehold) won the 100 meter dash with a time of 10.93 in the finals.
MU returns to West Long Branch next weekend for the 19th Annual Monmouth Season Opener, where more than 20 schools will compete on Friday and Saturday.
