- Freshman Kevin Murphy
(Lafayette Hill, Pa./Penn Charter) scored twice for the Hawks, but the Monmouth University men's lacrosse team dropped an 8-3 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference contest at Siena College on Saturday afternoon. With the loss, Monmouth falls to 0-7 overall and 0-2 in the MAAC, in its first season of competition.
"For the most part today we played really well and were able to execute in many areas of the game this afternoon," said head coach Brian Fisher. "Our goalies and defense are playing great right now and had another good day. With the exception of a few breakdowns on the defensive side, we forced Siena to earn their opportunities today."
Murphy got the Hawks on the board just 56 seconds into the contest with an unassisted score, but the Saints netted three straight scores to hold a 3-1 edge at the half.
Following a scoreless third quarter, the Saints scored a pair to grab a 5-1 lead with 12:26 left in the fourth period.
The Hawks got another unassisted score from Murphy with 7:46 showing to make the score 5-2, before Siena took a 7-2 lead with 3:15 left.
Junior Zach Johannes
(Sparta, N.J./Pope John XXIII/Franklin & Marshall) tallied the Hawks' third unassisted score of the game, to get Monmouth within 7-3 with 2:40 remaining, but Siena answered 39 seconds later to account for the 8-3 final.
Fisher added, "Offensively, our decision making has gotten better in the past few weeks and although it didn't show on the scoreboard, we played pretty well on that end of the field. We must continue to work on our fundamentals and skill in order to capitalize on our opportunities to keep some pressure on our opponents."
Siena outshot Monmouth 46-40, as freshman Nick Hreshko
(Warrington, Pa./La Salle College H.S.) made eight saves for the Hawks in the first half, while junior Garrett Conaway (Marriottsville, Md./Liberty/Essex-Howard CC) made nine stops.
Siena (5-3, 2-0 MAAC) got three goals from Kyle Curry and five assists from Richie Hurley.
Monmouth returns to action on Wednesday, March 26, when the Hawks travel to Lehigh University for a 7:00 p.m., non-conference contest at the Ulrich Sports Complex.@MUMen_sLacrosse -- #BelieveCompeteSucceed
