TRACK AND FIELD OPENS OUTDOOR SEASON AT WAKE FOREST

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Monmouth men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams opened the 2014 outdoor track and field season at the Wake Forest Open on Friday. In Day One of the event, MU saw strong performances in many event areas.

“We were happy to open the outdoor season with some great performances at a very nice meet at Wake Forest,” said Head Coach Joe Compagni. “Tomorrow is another great opportunity for some of our people.”

Kate Frye (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant Boro) took third overall in the 100 hurdles, racing a 14.51 in the preliminaries and a 14.54 in the finals. Lachelle Wallace (Herndon, Va./South Lakes) claimed seventh in the 100 meter dash, finishing in 12.14 seconds. Laura Williams (North Brunswick, N.J./North Brunswick Township) also performed well, notching a third place finish in the 400 with a time of 56.23. In the field events, Tilah Young (Barnegat, N.J./Barnegat) took fifth (168’) and Taylor Johnson (Woolwich, N.J./Kingsway Regional) was the ninth place finisher with a throw of 158’8” in the hammer throw.. Finally, Kim Price (Wilmington, Del./Concord) claimed seventh in the triple jump, jumping 37’4”.

On the men’s side, Joey Marini (Lincoln Park, N.J./Boonton) won the triple jump with a mark of 47’ 6 ¼“. Liam Vogt (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) was just behind Marini in sixth, leaping 44’7”. In the 110 hurdles, Jalen Walker (Burlington, N.J./BCIT/Burlington Township) earned IC4A qualifying marks with a time of 14.73, while Geordan Ferguson (Lakehurst, N.J./Manchester Township) also qualified for IC4A’s with his third place finish at 14.63 seconds. Ben Boyd (Port Murray, N.J./West Morris Central) finished in 11th in the 400 at 49.24.

Errol Jeffrey (Brooklyn, N.Y./Transit Tech/Bronx C.C.) was the third place finished in the hammer throw with a throw of 188’2”, an IC4A qualifying toss. Tim Wilson (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville) was just two back in fifth at 178’11”, a U.S. Junior National qualifying throw. Continuing on the men’s side, McLean Lipschutz (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) took second in the javelin with a mark of 225’7”, while Vince DuVernois (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) was just a foot behind in third. Zach Torrell (Manahawkin, N.J./Lacey Township) finished fifth at 216’4”, and Kevin Gilhuly (Wallingford, Conn./Mark T. Sheehan) also marked in the top ten. All five javelin participants who placed in the top ten for MU qualified for IC4A’s. Finally, in the shot put, Jeffrey came in second with a shot of 60’ 9 ¼“. Taylor Bernstein (Pine Brook, N.J./Montville Township) finished fourth with a shot mark of 54’2”, joining Jeffrey with IC4A qualifying marks. Tevin Kirby-Stewart (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) finished ninth at 49’11”.

Tomorrow, several other MU athletes will compete at Wake Forest while a small group will travel to a meet at Wagner.
