SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Alicia DeSanto (Upper Darby, Pa./Upper Darby) singled and scored a run, but the Monmouth University softball team fell at San Diego State, 5-1, Tuesday night. With the loss, the Hawks fall to 6-9, while the Aztecs improve to 22-8.
Kayleena Flores (Atwater, Calif./Buhach Colony) chipped in with a triple, while Vanessa Cardoza (Santa Ana, Calif./Ocean View) added a single. Sydney Underhill (Temecula, Calif./Chaparral) went the distance in the circle, allowing five runs, four earned, on seven hits and three walks in six innings pitched. She struck out five.
A one-out walk in the first came back to bite Underhill when the Aztecs’ Hayley Miles doubled with two outs to score the game’s first run. The Hawks pushed across an unearned run to tie the game at 1-1 in the fourth when DeSanto singled, moved to second on a groundout, third on a passed ball and scored on an error.
The Aztecs retook the lead on a double steal in the bottom of the fifth, when an overthrow to third allowed Dominique Dinner to score the go-ahead run. A walk, an infield single and a Jaylene Ignacio two-run triple to lead off the bottom of the sixth staked San Diego State to a 4-1 lead. Dinner followed with an RBI single to push the Aztecs’ advantage to 5-1.
The Hawks conclude Spring Break action in California Thursday when they face Dartmouth and UC Riverside in Riverside, California. First pitch against the Big Green is slated for 1:30 p.m. (ET), while the Hawks will face the Highlanders at 4 p.m. (ET).
