EDISON, N.J. – Monmouth University junior Victor Pugliese (Boulogne, France/CNED [San Diego]) has been named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Men’s Tennis Player of the Week, league officials announced Wednesday. Pugliese registered a pair of wins at No. 1 singles as the Blue and White split last week’s matches with Saint Joseph’s and Lafayette.
“I am happy for Victor to get the recognition he has earned,” said head coach Cory Hubbard. “He has had a good start going 4-1 at No. 1 so far this season. I knew when Victor committed to Monmouth he would be one of the top players in the MAAC. We have been working on adding new areas to his game and playing more aggressive and he is seeing the improvement.”
After falling in the opening set to Saint Joseph’s Jose Sierra, Pugliese rallied in final two sets to earn the 6-7, 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 1 singles. The transfer captured his second-straight victory, cruising to a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Brandy Goldstein of Lafayette on Friday. In MU’s 7-0 blanking of the Leopards, Pugliese, along with teammate Luke Adamus (Mosman, New South Wales/Redlands), eased to an 8-2 win over Chris Matturi and Brian Pinkard at No. 2 doubles.
To date, Pugliese stands at 10-4 overall in single matches, including a 4-1 mark in dual matches with wins over opponents from Army, Boston College, Saint Joseph’s and Lafayette.
Pugliese and the Hawks return to the courts this weekend as they travel south to Annapolis, Md. for a meeting with Navy on Sunday, March 9th.
