PRINCETON, N.J. – The Monmouth University men’s tennis squad defeated Boston College, 4-3, before falling to No. 55 Princeton, 6-1, this past weekend. Freshman Luke Adamus (Mosman, New South Wales/Redlands) sealed the victory for the Blue and White (1-4) over the Eagles, coming from a set down to win in a third-set tiebreaker.

On Saturday, Boston College jumped out to a 3-0 lead after sweeping the doubles points and claiming singles wins at No. 4 and No. 6. Junior Victor Pugliese (Boulogne, France/CNED [San Diego]) got the Hawks on the board with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 1 over Jonathan Raude, while Przemyslaw Filipek (Bedzin, Poland/Second Lo [Silesia]) downed his No. 2 counterpart Aiden McNulty by a score of 6-2, 6-4. Freshman Christian Vieira (Houston, Texas/Memorial) kept MU’s hopes alive by holding off Matt Wagner 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 at No. 5 to set up Adamus’ deciding match. The newcomer, making just his fourth appearance in a MU uniform, fell in in the opening set 5-6, dropping the tiebreaker 7-3. Adamus battled back taking the second set 6-4 and forced a tiebreaker in the final set. Ahead in the tiebreaker by a point, Adamus delivered a forehand winner to give Monmouth its first win of the season.

"This was another unbelievable effort from our team coming back from a 3-0 deficit,” said head coach Cory Hubbard. “As I told the team all season, we are going to have a lot of these 4-3 matches. We had been in this same situation against Lehigh and Army and that experience paid off as we stayed poised and kept believing. I am so happy for the guys to get that first win. The excitement of beating an ACC team and coming from behind was an unbelievable feeling."

The next day, Princeton, ranked No. 55, handed the Hawks a 6-1 loss. Monmouth nearly stole the doubles point as all three matches ended in a tiebreaker, while Vieira earned MU’s lone point, winning his fourth straight singles match with a 6-0, 6-2 decision over Ben Quazzo at No. 6.

Hubbard added, "We had a big opportunity to play against a nationally ranked team and the level of energy the team played with was amazing. Despite the loss, we had a great weekend by beating BC and playing well against Princeton which should give our team a big boost in confidence."

Monmouth opens up its Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) slate with a 3:00 p.m. battle with Saint Peter’s in Jersey City, N.J. on Thursday, February 13.
