EDISON, N.J. – The Monmouth University men’s tennis team has been selected to finish second according to the league head coaches as announced in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Men’s Tennis Preseason Coaches’ Poll, officials announced Tuesday afternoon. The Hawks earned 48 points and were edged by heavy favorite Marist, which captured 64 total points.
The 2014 MAAC Men’s and Tennis Championships will take place at Mercer County Park in West Windsor, New Jersey from April 26-27.
The Red Foxes, winners of five of the last six MAAC titles, earned the unanimous first place nod, while the Hawks landed in second as they embark in the first year in the conference. The Blue and White edged Quinnipiac by three tallies, while Fairfield followed the Bobcats in fourth with 43 points. Niagara claimed fifth with 39 points, followed by Saint Peter’s (21) and Siena (20) in sixth and seventh, respectively. Rider rounded out the eight-team league with eight points.
The Hawks (0-3) are paced by junior Victor Pugliese (Boulogne, France/CNED [San Diego]) who has a 7-3 overall singles record for the Blue and White. The transfer, who is ranked 19th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Region Singles Rankings, advanced to the third round of the ITA Championship last fall. Junior classmate Freddy Marcinkowski (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) also earned seven wins this season, while newcomer Christian Vieira (Houston, Texas/Memorial) has captured six wins in his first season in West Long Branch.
Monmouth returns to the courts this Sunday, February 9th for a doubleheader against Princeton and Boston College. First serve from Princeton, N.J. is slated for 2:30 p.m.
