MAAC COACHES SELECT MONMOUTH WOMEN’S TENNIS EIGHTH
EDISON, N.J. – The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) head coaches have selected the Monmouth University women’s tennis team to finish eighth as announced in the MAAC Women’s Tennis Preseason Coaches’ Poll. The Hawks, who continue its inaugural year in the league with their spring opener at Marist on March 26th, received 21 points in the annual poll.
Quinnipiac was selected to win the championship, capturing 78 points, followed by Fairfield with 71 tallies. Marist was slated third with 65 points, while Niagara and Siena were placed fourth and fifth with 55 and 46 points, respectfully. The coaches selected Saint Peter’s sixth with 32 points, four points ahead of Manhattan which claimed seventh. The Hawks finished 12 points ahead of Rider, which rounded out the nine-team poll.
The Hawks carry a 3-6 (1-2 MAAC) record into the spring season after picking up wins over Rider, Wagner and La Salle in the fall. MU nearly captured a pair of MAAC victories in September, falling 4-3 to both Saint Peter’s and Manhattan. A pair of freshmen in Kendal Kauffman (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) and Chioma Gabriel (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) pace the Blue and White, each producing four singles wins on the year, while junior Farrah Smoke (Spring Lake Heights, N.J./Manasquan [Brookdale CC]) and rookie Robyn Belen (Marlboro, N.J./Marlboro) each earned three victories in the fall.
The 2014 MAAC Women’s Tennis Championships will take place at Mercer County Park in West Windsor, New Jersey from April 26-27.
