UNIVERSITY PARK, PA. - The Monmouth University men's basketball team fell at Penn State 84-52 in the Bryce Jordan Center, as part of the Barclays Center Classic on Tuesday evening. Monmouth, which trailed by seven points just 1:01 into the second half, fell victim to an 18-0 Nittany Lion run over nearly five minutes, as Penn State outscored the Hawks 44-22 in the second half. With the loss, Monmouth, which has played four of its first five games on the road, falls to 1-4.

"Tonight was a case of we ran out of gas," said head coach King Rice. "We played a good 20 minutes, and in the second half just didn't have enough energy to be able to keep it close. Then Penn State started hitting alot of shots and it got way out of hand for us. We are just looking forward to getting back into practice."

Trailing 40-30 at the half, Zac Tillman's (Yeadon, Pa./Shipley School) three-point play to open the second half, trimmed the Penn State advantage to 40-33 at 18:59, but the Nittany Lions responded with an 18-0 run to grab a 58-33 lead with 13:23 remaining. PSU, which shot 57.7% from the floor in the second half, pushed its spurt to 39-8 to lead 71-49, with 4:45 left.

After Tillman’s lay-in off a feed from Andrew Nicholas (Wrightsville, Pa./Eastern York) pulled MU within 5-4 and Chris Brady’s (Greenlawn, N.Y./Harborfields) short jumper had the Hawks within 8-6 at 18:10, the Nittany Lions built a 13-6 edge following Allen Roberts’ three-pointer with 15:00 left.

Three straight points from Josh James (White Plains, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) pulled the Hawks within 13-9 at 13:40, and a wing three-pointer from Deon Jones (Wilmington, Del./Sanford School/Towson) allowed MU to climb within 17-14 with 10:58 showing.

After PSU went in front 22-14 following a Graham Woodward trey, the Blue & White put together a 6-2 spurt, capped by a Max DiLeo (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) drive, to make the score 24-20 with 7:08 left. The Nittany Lions responded with an 11-4 run of their own to grab a 35-24 lead with 3:26 remaining.

The Hawks, who went 5:08 between field goals, netted six straight points behind consecutive three-pointers from DiLeo and James to make the tally 35-30, but PSU netted the final five points of the stanza to hold a 40-30 lead at the break.

James led the Hawks with 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting and four rebounds, while Tillman and DiLeo added seven points each for Monmouth, which connected on 35.6% (16-45) from the field and hit 15-of-22 from the free throw line. Tyrone O'Garro (Newark, N.J./Saint Peter's Prep) added seven rebounds, while Jones added five points and five boards for the Hawks.

Penn State (5-1) had four players in double-figures, led by Tim Frazier's game-high 19 points, on 8-of-11 shooting from the floor. PSU, which outrebounded MU 35-21, turned 16 Monmouth turnovers into 24 points and hit 53.8% (28-52) overall from the floor.

Monmouth returns to action on Friday, when the Hawks host Mississippi Valley State at 7:00 p.m., in the MAC as part of the Barclays Center Classic. The game will follow Longwood vs. North Carolina A&T in the MAC at 4:30 p.m.
