The Monmouth University women’s basketball team returns to action Thursday when it plays host to Wagner. The Hawks are coming off a tough 64-55 loss to Yale in their season opener on Saturday. Monmouth jumped out to a 13-point lead early in the second half with a 13-0 run going back to the end of first half. But Yale countered with a 15-2 run of their own to tie the game and eventually separated with another 12-0 run near the end of regulation. Wagner fell to nationally-ranked No. 7 Kentucky at home Sunday, 96-57. Freshman Jasmine Nwajei led the Seahawks with 19 points.

SCOUTING THE WAGNER SEAHAWKS

Wagner went 3-26 in former Monmouth assistant Lisa Cermignano’s first year as head coach. The Seahawks lost three starters, but return a pair of double-figure scorers in forward Stephanie Blais (10.3 ppg. in ‘12-13) and guard Jordyn Peck (10.2 ppg. in ‘12-13). Ugo Nwaigwe is the Seahawks’ top returning rebounder at 5.1 boards per game last year and had nine boards in the season opener vs. Kentucky. Six of Wagner’s 11 players on the roster are in their first collegiate action in 2013-14, including freshman Jasmine Nwajei, who scored 19 points in her first collegiate action vs. Kentucky.
