MONMOUTH TO HOST 2014 MAAC BASEBALL TOURNAMENT AT LAKEWOOD
EDISON, N.J. -- The 2014 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Baseball Championship will be held May 21-25 at FirstEnergy Park in Lakewood, N.J., it was announced today by Richard J. Ensor, commissioner of the MAAC. Monmouth University will serve as the host institution for the 2014 MAAC Baseball Championship,
“We’re excited that FirstEnergy Park will be the site of the 2014 MAAC Baseball Championship. It is a top-notch facility, and that’s something we always strive for when holding our championship events,” Ensor noted. “We want our institutions and their student-athletes to be able to experience and enjoy a memorable setting such as this.”
"The objective of the MAAC member schools and the MAAC office leadership was to find a location that would present an outstanding championship experience to our student athletes and coaches,” added John D’Argenio, director of athletics at Siena College and Chairman of the MAAC’s Baseball Committee. “FirstEnergy Park gives us a quality field and ancillary space that our teams will enjoy, and most important, we will be able to offer our teams and their family and friends an enjoyable in-game experience."
FirstEnergy Park is the home of the Lakewood BlueClaws, the Single A minor league affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies that plays in the South Atlantic League. The park features 6,588 seats, 20 luxury suites and a 23-foot by 23-foot video scoreboard.
“Monmouth University is looking forward to hosting the 2014 MAAC Baseball Championships. We are delighted that FirstEnergy Park in Lakewood was chosen as the 2014 site. It is a wonderful facility and will serve the MAAC schools well,” said Dr. Marilyn McNeil, Vice President and Director of Athletics at Monmouth. “Even better, it is a great commute for our fans and a terrific place to spend an afternoon in May.”
The 2014 MAAC Baseball Championship will feature a six-team field for the first time ever. It will be a double elimination tournament with three games scheduled for May 21-23, and either one or two games on May 24 to determine the champion. May 25 is set as a rain date.
Last year’s championship went down to the final at-bat in the bottom of the ninth before Canisius edged Siena, 12-11, for the title. The 2013 MAAC Championship was held at Arm & Hammer Park in Trenton, home of the New York Yankees Double A affiliate Trenton Thunder.
