FIELD HOCKEY CRUISES PAST SACRED HEART, 5-0
WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Seniors Alex Carroll (Oceanport, N.J./Shore Regional) and Trish O'Dwyer (Dublin, Ireland/Loreto Beaufort), along with junior Hannah Loux (Souderton, Pa./Christopher Dock Mennonite) each registered four-points, while senior Teresa Mathews (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley) recorded her second straight shutout as the Monmouth University field hockey team blanked Sacred Heart, 5-0, Friday afternoon in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play on So Sweet A Cat Field. With the victory, the Hawks improve to 6-9 overall and 3-0 in MAAC play, while the Pioneers fall to 4-10 on the year and 0-3 in league action.
Monmouth controlled play throughout the game, outshooting SHU, 18-8, and held a 7-2 edge in penalty corner opportunities, including a 6-1 advantage in the second half.
“It was great to see our team step up and capitalize on our scoring opportunities,” said head coach Carli Figlio, who notched her 60th career victory. “We had a well-rounded attack and our defense has been very solid these last few weeks getting us organized and coming up big for us.”
Following a scrum in front of the cage that was played with the backside of Sacred Heart’s goalkeeper Mary Altepeter’s stick, the Hawks were awarded a penalty stroke 8:30 into regulation. For the second-consecutive game, Carroll converted the awarded shot successfully, giving MU a 1-0 lead.
Monmouth added to its advantage in the 20th minute when O’Dwyer sent a pass in front of the cage to Loux who settled the ball, spun, and fired a shot through Altepeter’s legs which put the Hawks up 2-0. Loux tallied her second of the half exactly seven minutes later capitalizing on a push pass from Alyssa Ercolino (West Long Branch, N.J./Shore Regional) in front of cage to earn her fourth marker of the season and her first multi-goal game of her career.
Sacred Heart attempted to get on the board in the final seconds of the half, but Mathews deflected the initial cross out of the circle to allow the Hawks to go into the break ahead 3-0.
Just under three minutes into the second stanza, O’Dwyer fed Carroll off a corner play for her second of the game and team-leading ninth of the season. O’Dwyer capped off Monmouth’s scoring in the 64th minute as she deposited a loose ball inside the left post for her seventh goal of the year.
Mathews made three saves to earn her eighth career clean-sheet, while Altepeter turned away five shots in the loss.
The Hawks continue a three-game homestand on Sunday, October 27th, at 1 p.m. as it welcomes in MAAC opponent Quinnipiac (9-6, 2-1 MAAC) to So Sweet A Cat Field. Prior to the start of the game, Monmouth field hockey will honor its three seniors, Carroll, Mathews and Ali Askinas (West Chester, Pa./B. Reed Henderson), in its annual Senior Day celebration.
