WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – The Monmouth University field hockey team fell 3-0 to visiting Saint Francis University in its final non-conference game of the season, Sunday afternoon on So Sweet A Cat Field. The Hawks, who open Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play at Siena next Friday, falls to 3-9 on the year, while the Red Flash improve to 6-4 with the victory.
The Red Flash built a 2-0 lead behind goals from Autumn Pellman and Selena Adamshick in the opening half. Pellman added a second-half tally, assisted by Adamshick, to cap off the scoring for the visitors. Alex Carroll (Oceanport, N.J./Shore Regional) fired two shots for Monmouth, while Melanie Dawson (Berlin, N.J./Eastern Regional/UNC) connected a shot on goal.
Junior goalkeeper Amanda Westerweller (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel), who started the game for the Blue and White, made four saves in defeat. Senior Teresa Mathews (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley) was credited with two saves in 23 minutes of action. Samantha Zeiders made one save, while receiving help from a Carissa Makea defensive save, en route to her first shutout of the season.
Saint Francis outshot the Hawks, 11-3, and held a 9-4 advantage in corner opportunities.
The Hawks’ game against the Saints marks MU’s first ever MAAC game. The contest is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start in Loudonville, N.Y.
