FIELD HOCKEY FALLS AT NO. 5 SYRACUSE, 8-1
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Monmouth University field hockey team fell to No. 5 Syracuse, 8-1, Sunday afternoon at Coyne Stadium. The Orange had five different players register a goal as it improves to 10-1 on the year, while the Hawks fall to 3-7.
Syracuse, the third nationally ranked team MU has faced this season, was paced offensively by Karlee Far, who registered a hat trick, and Sarah Kerly, who found the back the cage twice. Emma Russel and Liz Sack each scored once for SU, while Leonie Geyer finished the afternoon with a goal and three assists.
MU scored its lone goal in the 51st minute when junior Melanie Dawson (Berlin, N.J./Eastern Regional/UNC) sent a feed into the circle that kicked up and deflected off a defender and into the cage. Senior Trish O'Dwyer (Dublin, Ireland/Loreto Beaufort) and junior Hannah Loux (Souderton, Pa./Christopher Dock Mennonite) each registered two shots on the afternoon.
Junior goalkeeper Amanda Westerweller (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel) set a new career-best with 12 saves, while senior Alex Carroll (Oceanport, N.J./Shore Regional) and sophomore Lauren Horner (Shnecksville, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh) both registered a defensive save.
For the game, the Orange outshot the Blue and White, 32-4, and held a 9-2 advantage in penalty corner opportunities.
Monmouth returns to action this Wednesday, October 9th, as it travels to intrastate rival Rutgers for a 4 p.m. game in Piscataway.
