PRINCETON, N.J. – Junior Freddy Marcinkowski (Sparta, N.J./Sparta ) picked up two singles victories to pace the Monmouth University men’s tennis team at the Princeton/Farnsworth Invitational last weekend. The Hawks captured four total wins at the tournament, which featured players from Binghamton, Bucknell, Buffalo, Columbia, Cornell, Fairleigh Dickinson, Georgetown, Monmouth, NYIT, Penn, St. John's, Temple and Yale, as well as the host Tigers.

“I am very pleased with how the guys represented Monmouth last weekend,” stated head coach Cory Hubbard, who landed TennisRecruiting.net’s 40th ranked recruiting class this past summer. “This was the first time we had played in the Princeton Invitational so it was a great experience to compete against some of the top teams in our region.”

Marcinkowski downed Temple’s Hernan Vasconez 6-1, 6-1, before rallying to defeat Buffalo’s Akil Mehta, 2-6, 6-0, 6-2. A pair of freshmen in Christian Vieira (Houston, Texas/Memorial) and Bee Kumthonkittikul (Bangkok, Thailand/Pendleton School) each earned their first collegiate wins in the team’s opening weekend. Vieria cruised past Yale’s Tommy Ratchford, 6-2, 6-2, while classmate Kumthonkittiku edged Andrew Berman of Penn, 6-4, 6-5 (7-5).

“If you look at the results, we were able to pick up wins against players from Yale, Penn, and Temple, which shows how much our program is improving,” added Hubbard, who enters his first full season with the Blue and White. “I was very excited to see two of our freshman pick up wins in their first college matches. Freddy and Brant [Switzler] played tough matches and showed a lot of improvement since last year.”

Hubbard added “We look forward to a great week of practice as we prepare to play the USTA National Collegiate Invitational at the U.S. Open. This will be a great experience for our team, to play some big time competition on the U.S. Open courts. “

MU returns to action this weekend, September 20-22, for the USTA National Collegiate Invitational in Flushing, N.Y.
