ASHLEY SANDLER NAMED NEC PLAYER OF THE WEEK
SOMERSET, N.J. – Monmouth University sophomore Ashley Sandler (Jericho, N.Y./Syosset) was named Northeast Conference Co-Player of the week, league officials announced Tuesday afternoon. The second-year Hawk, who earns her second career league honor, posted a 4-0 record, including a 3-0 NEC mark, in a week that saw the Blue and White go 3-1.
Sandler did not drop a game in rolling to a 6-0, 6-0 win over La Salle’s Allison Amrein last Tuesday, then stopped Wagner’s Rachel Jurgielewicz, 6-0, 6-4, two days later.
On Saturday, Sandler edged the Mount’s Renee Deane in a marathon three-set affair, winning 6-2, 3-6, 13-11. The following afternoon she bookended her week with another 6-0, 6-0 victory, this time over St. Francis Brooklyn’s Akuila Edwards. Sandler, who hails from Jericho, New York, won twice at No. 2 doubles with Dana Ferrari (Saddle Brook, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) and once at the No. 1 spot with Brooke Verdiglione (Englishtown, N.J./St. John Vianney).
The Hawks (5-12, 3-6 NEC) will be the No. 9 seed in the upcoming Northeast Conference Championships, which are held at Mercer County Tennis Center in West Windsor, N.J. April 18-21. Monmouth will take on eighth-seeded Robert Morris in the women’s feed-in match on Thursday beginning at 11 a.m.
