WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – In its final two matches before the 2013 Northeast Conference Tennis Championships, the Monmouth University women’s tennis team fell at Mount St. Mary’s, 6-1, Sunday afternoon before returning home to defeat St. Francis Brooklyn by the same score, Monday afternoon at the MU Tennis Courts.

The Hawks (5-12, 3-6 NEC) will be the No. 9 seed in the upcoming Northeast Conference Championships, which are held at Mercer County Tennis Center in West Windsor, N.J. April 18-21.  Monmouth will take on eighth-seeded Robert Morris in the women’s feed-in match on Thursday beginning at 11 a.m.

Ashley Sandler (Jericho, N.Y./Syosset) scored the lone point for the Hawks in Sunday’s setback to the Mount.  The sophomore defeated her counterpart Renee Deane in the first set 6-2, but dropped the second set 6-3.  The two went back-and-forth in the tie-breaking third set, with Sandler coming out victorious, 13-11.

The Hawks ended the regular season on a high note against the Terriers.  Nicole Lippens (West Long Branch, N.J./Shore Regional) and Brooke Verdiglione (Englishtown, N.J./St. John Vianney) eased to an 8-0 doubles victory over Luda Lisovksa and Jovanna Bojinovic, while Sandler and Dana Ferrari (Saddle Brook, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) matched their teammate’s result by blanking Dragana Dzigurski and Akuila Edwards to earn the doubles point for the Hawks.  In singles play, Verdiglione, Sandler, and Ferrari, who were playing No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4, respectively, all shutout their opposition 6-0, 6-0 to help Monmouth ease to a 6-1 win.

Prior to the match against the Terriers, Monmouth honored its four seniors, Lippens, Ferrari, Courtney Ciandella (Pompton Lakes, N.J./Pompton Lakes) and Alyssa Teehan (Red Bank, N.J./Middletown South) for their dedication both on and off the court.
