WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – The Monmouth University men’s tennis team defeated visiting Wagner College and Gloucester, 6-1 and 5-0, respectfully, Sunday afternoon at the MU Tennis Courts.  The Hawks swept the doubles point in both matches, while only dropping one singles match on the afternoon.

"Sunday was some of the worst conditions I have seen with the wind so it made the day a lot tougher, both physically and mentally,” said first-year head coach Cory Hubbard.  “I am happy we were able to get the two wins.  Doubleheader matches are always tough because it’s such a long day and lot of tennis, but this will help us down the road.”

The doubles teams of Freddy Marcinkowski, Ramy Bekhiet and Jason Prezant, Jason Rothstein got the Blue and White off on the right foot in its second matchup with Wagner this season. Marcinkowski and Bekhiet rolled over Sawyer Fonda and Christian Grau, 8-1, while Pierce and Rothstein handled Steve Nakajima and Taylor Santoro, 8-3.

Bekhiet continued his strong play at No. 2 singles as the freshman notched his sixth-straight victory, downing Fonda 6-1, 6-2.  Bekhiet now earned a victory in seven of his last eight singles matches dating back to early March.  Prezant held off Santoro 6-0, 7-5 before Rothstein and Pierce recorded a pair of shutouts over Jarema and Nakajima, respectfully.

In the nightcap, MU started in similar fashion by sweeping the doubles point. Marcinkowski and Bekhiet posted an 8-2 win over Mike Perrone and Donovan Vassaloit and Rothstein and Prezant eased to an 8-0 victory over Jon Sjolander and Shamell Martin.

In singles play, Marcinkowski downed Vasalott 6-0, 6-2 and Bekhiet handled Perrone 6-2, 6-2, while Rothstein defeated Martin 6-1, 6-0 and Pierce secured the MU victory with a 6-0, 4-6, 10-4 victory over Lovis.

After taking on Quinnipiac on Monday, the Hawks will travel up the New Jersey Parkway to battle intrastate rival Fairleigh Dickinson on Wednesday, April 10th at 3:00 p.m.
