WOMEN'S TENNIS DROPS NEC OPENER TO SHU, 7-0

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - The Monmouth University women's tennis team fell in its Northeast Conference opener, 7-0, to Sacred Heart, Wednesday afternoon.  With the loss, the Hawks fall to 0-2 (0-1 NEC) on the year, while the Pioneers improve to 1-0 (1-0 NEC) after their first dual match.

In third singles, Ashley Sandler (Jericho, N.Y./Syosset) nearly took her opponent, Katie DeRienzo, to a third set.  After falling in the opening set, 6-2, the sophomore held a 5-4 edge, but ultimately fell, 7-5.  The Pioneers won all three doubles matches and took all six singles spots to earn the 7-0 victory.

Monmouth hits the road this weekend for the Navy Tournament, held in Annapolis, Md.
