WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - The Monmouth University men's tennis team completed a highly-successful first fall tournament in the New Jersey Invitational this past weekend. The Hawks took victories in 10 of 15 individual matches against competition from The College of New Jersey, Rider University and Saint Peter's University.
Sophomore Freddy Marcinkowski (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) led the squad with three individual victories, while freshmen Ramy Bekhiet (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville), Jason Prezant (Montvale, N.J./Pascack Hills), and Eric Pierce (Barrington, R.I./Barrington) each picked up a pair of wins for the Blue and White. Rookie Brant Switzler (Stockton, N.J./Hunterdon Central) also landed in the win column in his first collegiate event.
Marcinkowski downed TCNJ's TJ Riley, 6-1, 6-2, and was victorious against Rider's Rollie Malfitano, 6-2, 6-1. The sophomore earned his final singles win of the weekend on Sunday, edging Saint Peter's Alex Frakes, 6-2, 6-1. Bekhiet cruised past the Broncs' Ryan Carpenter, 6-2, 6-0, while defeating TCNJ's Howard Telson, 6-3, 7-5. Prezant posted a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Martino of Rider, before coming from behind to down the Peacock's Fabin Valdiviezo, 2-6, 6-4, 1-0. Pierce recorded a 6-2, 6-0 win over Nick Lubold of Rider and came away victorious in his match against SPC's Mario Huljev, 6-4, 3-6, 1-0, while Switzler breezed past Rider's Drew Laverty, 6-0, 6-0.
In doubles play, the duo of Marcinkowski and Bekhiet downed Rider's Malfitano and Lubold, 8-1, and registered an 8-6 win over Saint Peter's Frakes and Knezevic. The team of Switzler and Prezant blanked Saint Peter's Laverty and DiMartino, 8-0.
The Hawks return to action Friday, when they take part in the Villanova Invitational.
