WOMEN'S TENNIS SPLITS IN FIRST DAY OF NEC TOURNAMENT

WEST WINDSOR, N.J.- Monmouth University women's tennis won its opening round
match against Wagner 5-0, but fell to top-seeded Fairleigh Dickinson 4-0 to end
their hopes at a Northeast Conference Championship.
In the match against Wagner, the Hawks won or were winning every match when it
was stopped due to time constraints. Sophomore Brooke Verdiglione (Englishtown,
N.J./St. John Vianney) defeated Kari Rezac 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 2 singles spot,
with Ashley Sandler (Jericho, N.Y./Syosset) earning a 6-1 win at No. 3 and Dana
Ferrari (Saddlebrook, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) sweeping Lauren Hauer 6-0,
6-0 at No. 4. Senior Jessica Slinger (Tinton Falls, N.J./Monmouth Regional) was
a 6-2, 6-1 winner over Catharine Scavelli in the final singles spot. The Hawks won both the first and third
doubles matches and was winning the third when it was called.
Monmouth advanced to play top-seeded FDU, eventually losing 4-0. The Knights
swept the Hawks 8-0 in the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles competition to earn the team
point. FDU earned wins at the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4 spots to capture the
victory and move on to quarterfinal play.
The Hawks, 4-17 overall, will play Mount St. Mary's in the consolation bracket
at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
