WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J.- Monmouth University
fifth-year senior Jose Gumbs (Queens, N.Y./Hebron Academy) was named as a First
Team Preseason All-American by Consensus Draft Services on Monday afternoon.
"Jose is one of the hardest working players on our team," said MU Head Coach Kevin
Callahan. "He's a veteran leader on our defense and we are expecting him
to play a big role in 2011."
Gumbs, a safety, enters his final season for the Hawks with 231 total tackles
and is fresh off his second consecutive First Team All-NEC selection.
In 2009 he earned Northeast Conference Defensive Player of the Year, despite
playing outside linebacker for some of the season, a position that he had never
played. He earned NEC Defensive Rookie of the Year honors in 2008 and has
led the Hawks in total tackles each of the last three seasons. He
currently sits in ninth all-time in total tackles and has two interceptions,
four fumbles recovered and eight pass breakups.
Gumbs was the only Northeast Conference player on the list, which can be found
