PUGLIESE ADVANCES TO ROUND OF 32 AS MENíS TENNIS WRAPS UP ITA REGIONALS
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Monmouth University junior Victor Pugliese (Boulogne, France/CNED/San Diego) advanced to the third round of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional Championships as the Monmouth University men’s tennis team wrapped up its fall slate, last weekend at Yale University.
After an opening round bye, Pugliese, who entered the tournament seeded 17th in the main draw, downed Princeton’s Alex Day, 6-1, 6-5 (7-5), to advance to the third round of the competition. In his next match, the junior transfer edged third-seeded Dragos Ignat of Columbia in the opening set, 6-5, winning the tiebreaker 7-4, but Ignat rallied in the final two sets to win 6-3, 6-4.
“This was a good tournament for Victor,” commented head coach Cory Hubbard. “He played a very composed match against Day so it was it was great for him to get the win. In his second match he played one of the top players in the region and I thought he competed extremely hard. Victor was in very good position to win when he went up 4-2 in the third set. Even though he came up a little short, he really showed tremendous heart and kept fighting. I was so proud of the way he represented our program. Victor showed he is capable of being one of the top-five players in the Northeast Region so I hope he can take the positives from this tournament and continue to work hard to reach our goals in the spring.”
Freddy Marcinkowski (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) earned another victory for the Hawks at the championships. The junior downed St. John’s MJ Every in a three-set bout 6-3, 4-6, 10-4 in the consolation round.
The Hawks will now look ahead to its spring season which kicks off January 19, 2014 with a scrimmage at Columbia. MU will travel to Lehigh January 26th for the spring opener.
