SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Senior Alex Carroll (Oceanport, N.J./Shore Regional) registered her first career hat trick and junior Melanie Dawson (Berlin, N.J./Eastern Regional/UNC) scored her second goal of the season as the Monmouth University field hockey team blanked Bryant, 4-0, in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play, Sunday afternoon at Bryant’s Turf Complex. The Hawks, who improve to 5-9 overall and 2-0 in league play with the win, outshot the Bulldogs (9-5, 2-1 MAAC) 15-7, while earning 12 corner opportunities compared to Bryant’s three.

“Today was a culmination of a great week of practice and being consistent in playing together and working towards a common goal,” said head coach Carli Figlio following the victory.

Carroll, who becomes the eighth player in program history to record a hat trick, opened the scoring two minutes and 46-seconds into regulation when she received a feed from senior Trish O'Dwyer (Dublin, Ireland/ Loreto Beaufort) off a corner play and blasted a shot from the top of the circle past Bryant’s goalkeeper, Megan Hancock, to give MU a 1-0 lead.

The Hawks’ attack continued to pressure Bryant’s defensive unit eight minutes into the second half. O’Dwyer sent a cross to Dawson in the circle where she sent a shot that got behind Hancock and struck a defender’s body, leading to a penalty a stroke, which was converted by Carroll to push MU’s lead to 2-0.

In the 51st minute, Alyssa Ercolino (West Long Branch, N.J./Shore Regional) inserted a corner pass to the top of the circle where Dawson found the back of the cage for her second goal of the season. Carroll capped off the scoring for the Blue and White with just over 10 minutes left in regulation as she sent a pass just above Hancock’s blocker. The defender’s team-leading seventh goal of the year was assisted by O’Dwyer.

Senior goalkeeper Teresa Mathews (Lumberton, N.J./ Rancocas Valley), making her second start of the season, made two saves to record her seventh career shutout. Hancock made six saves for Bryant in defeat.

Monmouth opens up a three-game homestand next Friday when it welcomes Sacred Heart to So Sweet A Cat Field for a 4 p.m. start.
