NEW YORK, N.Y. - Freshman Christian Vieria (Houston, Texas/Memorial) won two matches as the Monmouth University men’s tennis team wrapped up play at the Columbia Classic, last weekend at the Dick Savitt Tennis Center.
“I thought we put ourselves in position to win a lot of these matches but we came up short,” commented head coach Cory Hubbard. “It was a little disappointing because we played hard, but we couldn’t convert on the big points. It will be nice for the guys to have a break this weekend to regroup physically and mentally and be ready for the ITA Regional Championships next week.”
After dropping the first set in a tiebreaker 5-6 (4), Vieira rallied for a 6-2 victory over Fordham’s Max Peara in the second set, before clinching the singles victory with a 10-4 third-set win. In doubles play, the freshman teamed with sophomore Brant Switzler (Stockton, N.J./Hunterdon Central) to down Fairfield’s Dennis Zlobinsky and Ofir Solomon, 8-7 (3).
The Hawks conclude the fall slate at the ITA Regionals, beginning October 17th at Yale University.
