DAYTONA BEACH, FLA. - Led by junior Ian Thimble's opening day, one over-par 73, the Monmouth University men's golf team stands in eighth place after day one of the 2012 Northeast Conference Championships at LPGA International - Legends Course. Thimble, who is in a three-way tie for second place, is one shot off the individual leader after one round, looking to become Monmouth's third individual champion in program history.

The Hawks, who carded a 318 on day one, are four shots out of sixth place, and trail overall team leader, Mount St. Mary's (297) by 21 strokes. The Mountaineers ended day one with a score of 297 and four golfers in the top-10. Fairleigh Dickinson trails the Mount by four with 301, while Saint Francis (Pa,) finished day one in third with 305. Robert Morris and Sacred Heart sit in a tie for fourth after carding team scores of 306, while LIU Brooklyn and Central Connecticut share the sixth spot (314). Wagner (328) and St. Francis (N.Y.) (345) round out the field of ten. Bryant competed as individuals and did not record a team score, as they are still in the reclassifying process and are ineligible for the NCAA’s automatic bid into regional play.

Individually, the 2009 Rookie of the Year, Leo Garcia of Sacred Heart, paces the field with an even par score of 72. The senior birdied 13, 14 and 16 to keep him in first, and finished the day shooting par to solidify the top-spot on the leader board.

Thimble, who is in a tie for second position with Kevin Ellison from Mount St. Mary’s and Fairleigh Dickinson's Eduardo Escobar.

"Ian's play was very steady and his course management was very good," stated head coach Dennis Shea, in search of his second team championship and first since 2007. "We need to make better decisions as a team. We missed a lot of greens on the short side and it made it tough to get up and down. Tomorrow we will need to hit more greens in regulation to improve our play."

Monmouth freshman Brady Goodling, who carded a five over-par 77, stands in a tie for 18th place in his first championship action, while the duo of sophomore Corey Carrick and senior Daniel McCreesh each inked an 84 (+12) to sit in a tie for 42nd. Junior Luke DeSimone rounded out the Monmouth group with an 86 (+14) to stand in a tie for 47th position.

The second round of the 2012 NEC Men's Golf Championship is scheduled for Saturday, May 5, beginning at 8:00 a.m. The final round is slated for Sunday, May 6.
