WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - Monmouth University fifth-year senior goalkeeper Ashley Lewis (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Boro) was named the ECAC Division I Defensive Player of the Week on Thursday, November 14, league officials announced.
Lewis, who posted three straight shutouts to help lead the Hawks to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament Championship, also earned Tournament MVP honors, while making 12 saves.
The Hawks, who have not allowed a goal in the last 763:58 minutes of game action, rank first in the NCAA in shutout percentage (0.800) and goals-against-average (0.293), while Lewis ranks third nationally in GAA (0.33) and sixth in save percentage (.891).
Lewis has 13 individual shutouts on the season, as part of the Hawks' school-record 16 clean sheets, along with teammate Jocelyn McCoy (Crofton, Md./Archbishop Spalding).
Lewis is the second Monmouth player to be honored by the ECAC this season, as freshman forward Alexis McTamney (Bordentown, N.J./Bordentown Regional) earned Offensive Player of the Week accolades on September 10.
Monmouth (17-1-2) returns to action on Friday, when the Hawks face #24 Penn State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at Jeffrey Field, at 7:30 p.m.
