SOFTBALL DROPS SINGLE CONTEST AT HOUSTON, 3-1

HOUSTON, Tex. - The Monmouth University softball team fell at the University of Houston, 3-1 on Tuesday at Cougar Softball Stadium. The Hawks fall to 1-5 on the season with the loss, while UH improves to 8-9.

The Cougars scored twice in the bottom of the first and tacked on another run in the second, while MU was able to add a run in the sixth before falling.

MU scored in the top of the sixth frame when freshman Tish Derer (Philadelphia, Pa. /Saint Basil Academy) drew a leadoff walk and came around to score on a sacrifice fly from senior Alexa Ferrara (West Caldwell, N.J. /James Caldwell).

Junior Melissa Mehrer (Florence, N.J. /Florence Township) started in the circle for the Hawks, allowing five hits and three earned runs in five innings of work. She struck out two and walked only one in the game. Sophomore Lauren Sulick (Canfield, Ohio /Canfield) worked a scoreless sixth, giving up one run while striking out one and walking a batter.

The Hawks return to action tomorrow when they meet Sam Houston State in a 4:00 pm doubleheader.
